For years, public relations has been powered by tight deadlines, overflowing spreadsheets and an always-on news cycle. PR professionals may be expected to pitch dozens of journalists, track media coverage, draft statements, prepare spokespeople and deliver reports, all before the next story breaks. AI entered the industry with a compelling promise: automate repetitive work so PR teams could spend more time on strategy, creativity and relationships. The reality, however, is more complicated. AI is reducing some of the workload while simultaneously creating higher expectations around speed, volume and responsiveness.
One of the clearest benefits is faster content creation. Press releases, media alerts, social posts and initial pitches can now be drafted in minutes rather than hours. Human judgement is still essential to refine tone, context and accuracy, but AI eliminates the pressure of starting every piece of content from scratch.
AI is also transforming research and media monitoring. Building media lists, tracking competitors, analysing sentiment, summarising earnings calls and monitoring breaking news can be done far faster with AI-powered tools. During a crisis, real-time alerts can reduce the need for teams to constantly monitor multiple platforms manually. Content repurposing has also become easier, allowing one announcement to quickly become a media pitch, blog post, social posts and spokesperson talking points.
For junior professionals in particular, AI can remove a significant amount of repetitive administrative work, leaving more time for strategic thinking and relationship-building.
But there is another side to the story. As AI makes tasks faster, organisations can start expecting considerably more output from the same teams. If AI can personalise 20 pitches, why not 100? If a release can be adapted for six markets, why not twelve? Technology that was introduced to reduce workload can quickly become a justification for increasing it.
The news cycle is another example. AI can produce a reactive comment within minutes, creating an expectation that PR teams should respond immediately whenever a topic begins trending. The technology has made faster responses possible, but that speed can quickly become the new benchmark.
Personalisation is also raising the bar. AI can analyse a journalist's previous work and help tailor pitches, making generic outreach increasingly ineffective. While this can improve the quality of engagement, it also means PR professionals may spend more time researching and refining every interaction.
And AI is not infallible. It can hallucinate facts, misunderstand context and produce language that sounds generic or robotic. Human professionals therefore remain responsible for fact-checking, editing and applying judgement.
Most importantly, some of the most valuable aspects of PR cannot simply be automated. Journalists build relationships with people they trust. CEOs need advisers who can challenge a bad idea before it becomes a crisis. Sensitive situations require empathy, judgement and context. Storytelling and credibility are built through human relationships over time.
Ultimately, whether AI reduces burnout or increases it will depend less on the technology and more on how organisations choose to use it. If AI is used to eliminate low-value tasks and give teams more time for strategy, creativity and meaningful relationships, it can make PR careers more sustainable. If it is used simply to demand three times the output from the same people, burnout will remain, just with a more sophisticated interface.
AI is not replacing PR. It is redefining how the profession works. The organisations that benefit most will be those that use automation to reduce busywork while protecting the uniquely human skills that make effective communication possible. AI can reduce burnout, but only if we choose not to turn greater efficiency into permanently higher expectations.
